20160313 WBFN Birding
Members of the Willow Beach Field Naturalists (WBFN) led by Roger Frost gathered first at Cobourg Harbour then along Rice Lake to look for waterfowl and other birds. The harbour was fairly quiet for birds. There were several Long-tailed Ducks, two Mute Swans, a few Scaup and the usual collection of Geese and Mallards. Folks who had spotting scopes kindly let other members observe distant birds including a Snowy Owl.
Rice Lake proved to be the better area for bird numbers. There were several areas of open water close to shore that provided good viewing opportunities from Harwood along to Gore's Landing. Species observed included Ring-necked Duck, Common Merganser, Hooded Merganser, Common Goldeneye, Northern Pintail, Mallard, Canada Goose, Gull sp, Great Black-backed Gull, Belted Kingfisher. Also observed were Song Sparrow and Killdeer.
