20170610 Common Loon
The Canadian Lakes Loon Survey (CLLS) is conducted through Bird Studies Canada (BSC). As a BSC member I have the option of partipating in the CLLS, so I signed up for the first time to help with the 2017 survey. I am pleased to report that my mated pair of Common Loons were successful in producing a chick. Seen in the photos, this chick is mere days old and still at the downy stage. As requested by the survey, I will check in on these Loons periodically through the summer to monitor the success of this breeding. Through my informal monitoring of this pair (or a pair in this area) over the past few years, I observed failure in 2016 due to possible egg predation but success in previous years with either one or two chicks.
