20180409 Eastern Wolf Tracks
The highlite for this trip was photographing Eastern Wolf tracks. These are my first Wolf tracks in several trips to the park while looking along the Highway 60 corridor. In the end we found two trails. The first trail crossed the highway keeping close to cover, but then ventured out along a Beaver pond and dam while on route to inspect a lodge. Most of the trail displayed an alternate pattern with a trotting gait. When the Wolf crossed the highway, the trail picked up speed on either side with a average stride of 30". The trail veered around a tree where the wolf stopped to urinate on the base of the tree. The larger front track was 4.25" long by 3.25" wide. This Wolf was likely a large male. The second trail belonged to a smaller Wolf traveling through a wetland. We did not follow this trail. The short piece we observed showed a stride of 18" indicating a slower gait. Track size was 3.75" long by 3" wide. Note: the Eastern Wolf is also referred to as the Algonquin Wolf.
