20181104 WBFN Lake Ontario
Twenty members of the Willow Beach Field Naturalists (WBFN) gathered at Cobourg Harbour for the Clive Goodwin Memorial Bird Outing led by Roger Frost. The outing took us along Lake Ontario from Cobourg Harbour to areas east of Cobourg where Clive often birded. The big highlight was seeing the migration of Red-breasted Merganser at all Lake Ontario sites we visited. Flocks of 20 to 100+ were seen flying by regularly with estimates of the daily migration into the thousands. There was a large raft of diving ducks, most likely Scaup, east of Wicklow Beach. A Common Garter Snake made a late fall appearance. Birding off Trent Valley Road was challenging with bright sunny skies and high flying raptors, but we did add Red-tailed Hawk, Turkey Vulture and Eastern Bluebird to our list.
