20200301 PFN Otonabee River
Twenty members and guests of the Peteborough Field Naturalists (PFN) led by Steve Paul and Cathy Douglas looked for waterfowl and other birds along the Otonabee River from Trent University to Young's Point. Observed waterfowl included Common Goldeneye, Common Merganser, Hooded Merganser, Bufflehead, Mallard, Canada Goose and Trumpeter Swan. Steve gave an interesting mini-talk about Trumpeter Swans. Several other bird regulars were also observed. Bird sightings were greatly enhanced by Cathy's good vision and spotting scope. A few tracks were seen with Otter slides and a Mink trail being the most interesting. The highlights for the day for many were the unanticipated mammal sightings including Northern River Otter along the Otonabee River and three Coyotes traversing a frozen section of Katchewanooka Lake. The Otter was photographed from about 180 m and the Coyotes were 1 km away!
