20220227 PFN Tracking & Birding
Six members of the Peterborough Field Naturalists (PFN) gathered at the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre to look for wildlife tracks and sign. Small bird tracks were found but not identified to species; American Tree Sparrow and/or Dark-eyed Junco were the leading candidates. Mourning Dove tracks were clearly evident. Mammal species identified by tracks included Mouse sp, Red Squirrel, Eastern Gray Squirrel, Eastern Cottontail, Snowshoe Hare and Red Fox. Another possible species was Ermine but ID from the trail was uncertain. The weather varied from overcast to intense snow squall to sunny which made it interesting. Tracking was challenging due to snow infill. Observed birds were also documented: Blue Jay (1), Northern Cardinal (4), American Tree Sparrow (5), Dark-eyed Junco (8), American Goldfinch (2), Black-capped Chickadee (10), American Robin (1), Mourning Dove (1), American Crow (1), White-breasted Nuthatch (1), Downy Woodpecker (1), Red-bellied Woodpecker (1).
