20220508 PFN Hogsback Birding
Nineteen members of the Peterborough Field Naturalists (PFN) led by Scott McKinlay went birding to several locations west of Peterborough and south of Omemee. Highlight locations included the Cavan Swamp, Omemee Pond and Hogsback Trail. Birding was good and the weather was beautiful! While nearly 50 bird species were found, the warblers and other migrating songbirds had yet to peak. Some of the highlight bird species included White-throated Sparrow, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Trumpeter Swan, Caspian Tern, Blue-winged Teal, Ovenbird, Black-and-white Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler and American Kestrel. Butterflies observed were Mourning Cloak, Mustard White and Northern Azure. Scott also showed us a Red-bellied Snake that had been killed by off-road vehicles a day earlier.
