20220604 PFN Cavan Birding
Lynn Smith led a group of 12 members from the Peterborough Field Naturalists (PFN) on a birding outing at different locations in Cavan Township. Habitat areas varied including forest, stream, meadow and wetland. The species tally for all locations was 44. There were several highlights. Weather was sunny and comfortably cool. Mosquitoes mostly held off from their expected bombardment. Interesting finds included a Great Horned Owl feather and a Ground Wolf Spider. Among the observed birds, viewing a Common Nighthawk perched on a log was definitely tops on our list and was a lifer for several in attendance. No one had seen a Nighthawk so close before. Among Warblers, it was the Canada Warbler that ranked at the top. A few members hung around at Lynn's place at the end and were rewarded with Eastern Bluebird at the nesting box.
